Image description

This print depicts William Pitt (Prime Minister), Queen Charlotte and Edward Thurlow (Lord Chancellor) in a scene from Milton's 'Paradise Lost'. A crowned Pitt is Death, pointing his spear at Thurlow, who symbolises Satan. Thurlow holds aloft a cracked mace and defends himself with his Great Seal of office. The Queen's portrayal as the hag-like Sin is the most shocking. She throws herself protectively in front of Pitt. Gillray intended the print to parody contemporary paintings by Hogarth and Fuseli. The outrageous caricature of Queen Charlotte was deeply resented by the royal family.
