We sat down with our CEO, Dirk Hendrickx, to talk about his highlights from the archive. Following the announcement that Victoria Bridgeman is stepping down at the end of the year, Dirk has been appointed to succeed her at the start of 2020.
What is your (current) role at Bridgeman Images?
I am currently the CEO.
What do you love most about the job?
The people - both internally at Bridgeman Images and those the company works with externally.
What misconceptions do clients most commonly have about the archive?
The content itself - we offer far more than the artistic and historic content many know us well for. We are testing new ways to explain and promote this wide variety of assets to our customers and clients.
Dirk's top pics and clips from the archive are...
The Rose, 1958, Salvador Dali
I rather like Flowers in general and the contrast of the red and blue makes this extremely aesthetically pleasing.
Schroeder House, built in 1923-24, Gerrit Rietveld
Schroeder House, built by a Dutch architect (I can't deny my roots!): functional, light, airy and beautiful to look at!
New York and Cherry Blossoms, 2016, Mary Smith
Three reasons for this one: Nature in the City (that is one of the reasons I like living in London), Japanese painter (intriguing culture with a high sense of social responsibility) and vibrant and contrasting colours (just like that!)
Olive Orchard mid-June, 1889, Vincent van Gogh
I love an eye for details and aesthetics. Any picture of this work makes it look bigger than it is in reality and I still do not understand how!
Yves Saint Laurent Jumpsuit worn by Cobie Smulders, 2013, photographed by Emiley Schweich
YSL Jumpsuit - need I say more?
Thanks to Dirk for answering our questions!
