What is your earliest memory of an artwork and who was it by?

I grew up in a happy, but visually illiterate home. The closest we came to colour and composition would be in my dad's restaurant through the hues, shapes and textures of the kitchen. My first significant encounter with an artwork was the discovery, through reproduction, of George Braques' late sequence of bird images. Until then I just didn't know you could do such things...

What is your favourite time of day to be in your studio?

I'm an early riser, and when I can, like to be in the studio by 7.30am. It's an opportunity to gather thoughts before starting work. At that time, a good coffee is a great companion.

Talk us through a day in the life of Marco Cazzulini. What does it look like?

Varied. I principally split time between painting and graphic design so these shape my working practice. On any given day I could be out drawing, painting in the studio or sitting at my computer. I walk to my places of work and this provides essential space for reflection. It's amazing how much can spring to mind during a stroll. At the end of play, I keep time for family and friends and a shared meal is always valued. Part of my Italian heritage I guess.

How would you sum up your practice in a few words?

Colour, place, memory, change.

What's your most useful tool?

Time, and the wisdom to know what to do when.

You work as both a graphic designer and a painter. How do the two inform each other?

Historically, they have served different purposes but today the boundaries are blurred and bleed into one another. At an elemental level, colour and form are shared concerns.

Which processes inspire your work?

Good question. I think motivational forces are varied. Painting is an open-ended journey with small resolutions along the way. And, though there are plenty of cul de sacs, each picture is a step along the path. The landscape is a constant source for me but within that there is so much scope. You can work from the referential to the imagined.

You're a prolific sketchbook-keeper. Do you draw daily, and if so, how often do these drawings subsequently act as studies for finished works?

I draw regularly but not daily. These images can be complete in themselves or a catalyst for making paintings. Drawings are a repository of ideas and emotions and a means of working out responses to a variety of painterly concerns.

How do you find working to commission? Do you find it pushes your work in new directions?

It depends on who you are working for and with. A good brief will form the right expectations on both sides. However, the painting process is not so easily tamed and the act of working introduces an additional voice into the conversation.

What convinced you to join Bridgeman Studio for licensing, and what are your hopes for working as a Bridgeman Studio artist?

Bridgeman are well renowned and respected. They can take my work to places I would never reach. I trust them to do a good job for me and their clients.

What would you most like to see your images licensed for?

I haven't really thought about that. I believe my work will find suitable landing spots.
