Image description

Brawley, Imperial Valley, migratory camp. Originally a tenant farmer from near Mangrum, Oklahoma, came to California in 1936 after the drought, travels with the harvest crops. 6 children attend school wherever they stop long enough, 5 older children work. Father had earned about one dollar 73 cents for 10-hour day picking peas. Oldest daughter one dollar 25 cents. This had to cover transport to fields 20 miles away. Mother wants to return to Oklahoma "I want to go back to where we can live happy, live decent, and grow what we eat." Father unwilling "We can't go the way I am now. We've got nothing in the world to farm with. I made my mistake when I came out here."
