Image title
The Netherlands seen from the International Space Station in April 2004. - A picture of The Netherlands as seen from orbit by ESA's Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers, during the DELTA mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in April 2004. Zeeland and the four mouths of Rhine and Maas are on the left. After catastrophic floods in 1953, the Dutch government launched the Delta Plan to protect the populations from such disasters with dams on all the estuaries. Work was completed from 1958 to 1987. The DELTA mission was named in remembrance of this achievement. On the right of the picture are the Frisian islands that surround the Wadden Sea. Clearly visible is the man - made 30 - km dyke that closed the Zuiderzee in 1933 and formed the Ijsell Lake. Other man - made features easily identifiable are the large polygonal polders gained on the southern part of the inner sea. Flevoland and Nordoostpolder appear in beige while Markerwaard (to be completed in 2010) is a bluish green patch
