Rib Vault of Resurrection of Jesus, 1365-1367 (fresco)
Rib Vault of Resurrection of Jesus (Vela della Resurrezione di Gesù), by Andrea di Bonaiuto, 1365-1367, 14th Century, fresco
Whole artwork view. The image shows in its entirety the frescoed rib vault depicting the Resurrection; at its top, on a dark blue background, risen Jesus stands out, surrounded by a golden light; He wears a white long tunic and holds in His right hand the banner with the red cross, in the left one a twig of olive tree; at His feet one can see the open Holy Sepulchre with two winged angels at its sides; on the left the three pious women are depicted, who seem to come from the fortified city on the left edge, holding in their hands the vases full of unguent; at the feet of the sepulchre there are six sleeping men who symbolize Roman soldiers, as it is possible to deduce from the shield belonging to one of them, on which there is the inscription SPQR; on the right the risen Christ appears again, dressed in white with the banner with the red cross on it, depicted in the act of sending away Magdalene kneeled at His feet, in the iconography of Noli me tangere; the surrounding landscape is completed by several trees and a castle, which is possible to notice on a hill, on the right; below the rib vault one can notice another fresco depicting the Crucifixion of Christ and the two thieves
