The Passion of Jesus (La passione di Gesù), by Andrea di Bonaiuto, 1365-1368, 14th Century, fresco
Detail. The scene is set in a gloomy place, that symbolizes the Limbo; Jesus Christ, dressed in white and surrounded by light, stands on a slab of rock which crushes a dark blue devil; Jesus holds in His left hand the banner with the red cross and holds out His right one to a white-haired man with long beard and hair, almost trying to free him from his imprisonment; behind this old man's back it is possible to see other male figures with aureole, turned to the Saviour, too; on the left edge there is a column with square-section on which a white statue rests
