A man rides his bicycle loaded with bananas in rural Rwanda, June 20 2002. The central African country, still reeling from the horrors of its 1994 genocide, has just begun an experiment in mass justice aimed at helping to heal the scars of the massacres in which around 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in just 100 days. More than 100,000 suspected killers are currently behind bars awaiting trial, and Rwanda has relaunched a traditional court system to try and deal with the backlog of unheard cases. In "Gacaca" courts, Rwandan villagers will judge their peers by recounting their personal stories of what they saw during the massacres.
