A man walks past the Friday Mosque in Moroni, the capital of the Comoros islands, September 9, 2003. The mosque, which residents say is about 500 years old, is one of the most famous landmarks on the Comoros archipelago, which lies off the coast of east Africa. The population of the volcanic island chain is roughly 600,000, the vast majority Muslims. Arab traders dealing in slaves and spices brought Islam to the islands in the 15th century, using the main island - now called Grande Comore - as a base for commerce between east Africa and the Middle East.
