Aristomenes sacrifices to Zeus-the-Ithomates (litho)

Image description: Aristomenes sacrifices to Zeus-the-Ithomates. Towards the end of the second Messenian War (645-628 BC), Aristomenes, a famous Messenian general, being defeated in battle by the Spartans, retreated to a mountain stronghold. This he held for eleven years, making frequent raids into his enemies' country. He is here seen offering, to Zeus-the-Ithomates, the sacrifice called Hecatomphonsa, which could only be offered by a warrior who had slain a hundred foes with his own hand.
