British and Native Officers, 3rd Sikhs, 1879. Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879 The 3rd Sikh Infantry, part of the Punjab Frontier Force, was raised in Ferozepore in 1846. During the Afghan campaign the regiment was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel G. Noel Money and took part in many actions including those at Surkh Kotal, the Chardeh Valley, Takht-i-Shah and the Siege of Sherpur Cantonment. After operations in the Logar Valley in June and the march to Kandahar in August 1880, the regiment was the first to penetrate Ayub Khan's camp in the battle of Kandahar on 1 September.
