Image description

Bokhara opens its Gate to the Mongol Ogodai Khan, AD 1231. In 1231 Shah Jalalu'ddin Mangbarti of Khwarizm (Bokhara) was so weakened by his wars with the Seljuk ruler, Kaikubad of Rum (Syria), that he and his kingdom fell an easy prey to the Mongol Ogodai Khan, son of the great Chinghiz Khan. Bokhara, then the "Centre of Science", opened its gate to him, and the people placed themselves at the mercy of the conqueror. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
