The English Embassy during the Massacre of St Bartholomew. The massacre began in Paris on St Bartholomew's Day, of 24 August 1572. The ghastly crime was instigated by Catherine de Medicis. After discussing the matter with such leaders as the Marshal de Tavannes, Henry of Guise and the Duke of Anjou, she persuaded Charles that a massacre of the Huguenots was necessary for the public welfare, and he forthwith arranged the manner of its execution. The massacre lasted till 17 September, and in the provinces till 3 October. It was impossible to restrain the Catholics when once the signal had been given.
