RESIDENTS PASS EACH OTHER ON THE ISLAND OF HELIGOLAND, 2002-02-28 (photo)

Residents pass each other on stairs connecting Heligoland's lower town  with the "Oberland" (upper-land plateau) February 28, 2002. After World  War Two the British Armed Forces used the evacuated island as a bombing  range which destroyed Germany's only non-coastal island almost  completely. A German World War Two flak tower was the only surviving  structure on the "Oberland" of Heligoland, serving today as a  lighthouse. On March 1 the 1,600 residents of Heligoland will celebrate  the 50th anniversary of its resettlement. REUTERS/Christian Charisius    CHA
