United States Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa speaks with reporters at Dili airport prior to his departure from East Timor August 21. Harkin told reporters that he would recommend that U.S. President Bill Clinton ask the United Nations to send armed peace-keepers to the troubled territory of East Timor to stop intimidation and violence associated with the August 30 vote on independence. Senator Harkin along with Congressman Jack Reed (Democrat, RI) and Jim McGovern (Republican, Mass.) were in East Timor on a 24 hour fact finding mission. DW/PB
