Public drinking fountains, known as Fontaines Wallace were given to the city of Paris by Sir Richard Wallace (1818-90) a British philanthropist, who was a great benefactor of the people of Paris during the war of 1870, the Commune and later; Wallace made the preliminary sketches for the design of the fountains but the sculptor, Charles-Auguste Lebourg (1829-1906) was responsible for the finished work and the caryatids; the inspiration for these iron fountains was the Fontaine des Innocents; installation began in 1872; the fountain shown in this illustration is of the variety known as the 'Applied Model'; less expensive to make and install, the head of a naiad issues a trickle of water; only one remains today on rue Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire;
