Image description

Capture of the Emperor Romanus Diogenes by Alp Arslani in 1071. The Seljuk Turks ruled in Persia as the nominal regents of the shadowy Abbasid Caliphs from 1037 to 1195, and in Syria as independent rulers (Sultans of Rum) from 1084 to 1395. The early Seljuks were powerful monarchs, and the second of them, Alp Arslan (1063-1091) took possession of Syria and Palestine, and successfully fought the Greeks. In 1071 he defeated and captured the Emperor Romanus Diogenes, the hero of a great romance of the day, on the banks of the Araxes in Armenia, and held him to a high ransom. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro.
