The King's Colour. The White Ensign has been the flag representative of the senior service since 1864, when an Order in Council was made to the effect that ships of the Royal Navy should no longer fly the red and blue ensigns. It is unusual for the White Ensign to bear a badge of any description, the only exception being when it is used as a King's Colour. The Ensign then bears in its centre a crimson circle, inscribed with the Royal Cipher, enclosed within the Garter, and surmounted by the Crown. The King's Colour, which is used on ceremonial occasions, has only been introduced into the Royal Navy since the Great War.
