A View of the Cape of Good Hope and A Plan of the Town of...

Two perspectives of the Cape of Good Hope, showing what is modern day Cape Town, South Africa; The first a view over Table Bay upon which are labelled The Town, The Castle (The Castle of Good Hope), The Devils Mount called also Wind Hill, Charles Mount and Crown Hill (today known as Devil's Peak), The Sugar-loaf (today known as Lion's Head Mountain) and The Lion's Rump (now called Signal Hill); The second image is a plan of the Cape, showing Table Bay, the town, the Dutch star shaped fort as well as the surrounding mountains; The scale is given in French Toises, a unit of measurement that orginiates in pre-revolutionary France; The views are said to have been taken by Mons Bourset in December 1770 and printed in London by William Faden on Novemeber 25th 1795; At the time that the view was taken the Cape of Good Hope was under the control of the Dutch East India Company but in 1795, the year that this image was published, British forces took control of the Cape;
