Why buttons on soldier's cuff? Manifold are the reasons put forward for buttons on a soldier's cuff, but they are probably a remnant of the days when sleeves were slit and slashed, and could be fastened back out of the way to leave the sword hand unhampered. Charles II founded the army at a time when fashions were running riot. Another suggestion is that they prevented soldiers from wiping their noses on their sleeves, when all sorts and conditions of men were pressed into the King's service. As a badge of rank, they can be credited to the Chinese; a mandarin was distinguished by one button on his hat.
