An iron spit jack, believed to be one of two that are known to have been used in the Great Kitchens. It would have been fixed above the fireplace and through a series of gears, weights and pulleys, turned the spit on which meat was roasted. The spit jack was an important labour saving device in the kitchen that meant the spit no longer had to be turned by hand (usually by boys known as turnspits) or powered by a dog running in a treadmill
