Image description

Creator: Eurich, Richard Ernst (1903-92) An aerial view of a convoy of eighteen ships heading past the tip of The Needles, Isle of Wight, Britain, 1941. An aircraft flies towards the right while round 'percussion rings' and explosions in the water show where planes have dropped their bombs. The downward vapour trail of a destroyed aircraft is seen on the lower right and the plane is visible beneath the waves. A yellow parachute floats above the convoy, centre left. Richard Ernst Eurich was a British official war artist for the Admiralty in the Second World War, whose painting Dunkirk Beaches, 1940 received much praise and was displayed at the National Gallery. Winston Churchill was an admirer and used Eurich's Survivors From A Torpedoed Ship as a book illustration.
