Tupaia was a Polynesian navigator, artist, and translator who lived in the 18th century. He was born around 1725 in Ra'iatea, an island in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. Tupaia was known for his exceptional navigational skills and his ability to communicate with Europeans in their own language. He became a valuable member of Captain James Cook's crew during his voyages to the Pacific, serving as a navigator and interpreter. Tupaia's artistic talents were also highly regarded, and he created numerous drawings and maps of the places he visited. He was instrumental in helping Cook chart the Pacific and was a key figure in the first contact between Europeans and Polynesians. Tupaia died in 1770 in Batavia, now known as Jakarta, Indonesia, during Cook's third voyage. Despite his significant contributions to the exploration of the Pacific, Tupaia's legacy was largely forgotten until the 20th century.
