German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder looked set to win a confidence motion in parliament on Friday after a member of his junior coalition partners, the Greens, said four rebels had backed down. Schroeder's government of Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens had been on the verge of collapse because pacifist deputies from both parties said they could not support the Chancellor's plans to mobilise troops for the U.S.-led Afghan campaign. Schroeder had called for the confidence motion on Wednesday. He linked it to a vote seeking backing for plans to mobilise 3,900 soldiers for the first deployment of German troops outside Europe since World War Two, plans many deputies opposed.
