A mock amputated foot is seen after a staged operation on an actor dressed as a Prussian soldier during a re-enactment of the Battle of the Nations, an event marking the 190th anniversary of the biggest battle of the Napoleonic Wars on a field in the village of Liebertwolkwitz near the east German town of Leipzig on October 18, 2003. The most bloody slaughter of the Napoleonic epoch, in which tens of thousands of soldiers were killed, took place from October 17-19, 1813, and ended in front of the gates of Leipzig. At the height of the battle Napoleon fielded more than 200,000 men against an Allied force - which included contingents from Russia, Austria, Prussia and Sweden - of some 360,000 soldiers.
