Image description

Tragedy in the mountains. While trying to open a new, difficult route on the south face of the Presolana, in the Bergamo Pre-Alps, three young and valiant rock climbers, Renzo Scandella, Antonio Giudici and Costante Marinoni, the first two by Clusone, the third of Rovetta, fell from about sixty meters, smashing on the underlying scree. The first to fall seems to have been the lead climber, dragging his teammates into the flight. The nails, due to the violence of the tear and the weight, did not hold and came off the rock in that rather crumbly stretch. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 27 July 1958.
