Concentration camp in Auschwitz, 2014 (photo)

A muffle furnace built by German Erfurt-based company 'Toepfer & Soehne' is on display at the former Auschwitz concentration camp in Oswiecim, Poland, 10 December 2014. The perticular furnace model was built for continuous operation, starting on 1 October 1940, and was installed in several concentration camps. Hundreds of thousands of bodies were burned in the furnaces which were often combined with gas chambers such as in the crematoria I to V of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Auschwitz concentration camp was eventually liberated by the Soviet Armee on 27 January 1945. The premises of the concentration camp, which is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site has been a museum and memorial site since 1947, is named as 'Auschwitz-Birkenau - deutsches nationalsozialistisches Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager' (Auschwitz-Birkenau - German national socialist concentration and extermination camp) since 2007.
