Henri Francois d'Aguesseau (1668-1751) French judge, jurist, orator and Chancellor of France; appointed Chancellor in 1717, in 1718 he was deprived of office and exiled by the Regent because of his opposition to John Law; recalled in 1720 until 1722; in 1727 reappointed Chancellor on the advice of Cardinal Fleury and remained Chancellor until his death in 1751; although unsuccessful in his attempts to draw up a single law code for France, he was praised by Voltaire as 'the most learned magistrate France ever possessed'; fearful of religious wars and schism in France, he persuaded the French Parlement to accept the papal bull 'Unigenitus' of 1713 which condemned jansenism;
