Image description

This manuscript has been dated to ca. 1405. The scribe Johannes Parvus signed his name on f. 206v. This opening shows the familial arms of Jean III, seigneur of Acigné and of Cordemai (ca. 1430-1497), son of Jean II, seigneur of Acigné and of Fontenay (1409-1462), and of Catherine de Malestroit de Chateaugiron (d. 13 November 1434). The coat of arms faces a miniature depicting the Annunciation, which begins Matins of the Hours of the Virgin. This miniature was painted by the Luçon Master, one of the finest painters working in France in the beginning of the fifteenth century. His work is a prime example of the International Style, a style associated with courtly European culture at this time. The manuscript is signed on f. 206v by the Breton scribe Johannes Parvus (a.k.a. Jean Le Petit).
