Gales early work was in the Pre-Raphaelite manner, painted on panels prepared with a white ground in brilliant pigments. A comparable example, The Confidant of 1857, is in the Tate collection. Flower Girl was one of two pictures by Gale owned by the great Pre-Raphaelite and Old Master collector, William Graham, and was probably exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1855.
