Image description

This picture is related to a known portrait of Madeline Knox, who was a pupil of Walter Sickert. Miss Knox helped Sickert to establish an etching school in 1909 and after a few years in Canada returned to London in 1914 when she met and later married Arthur Clifton. Mr Clifton was a supporter of the short-lived Camden Town Group that included Sickert, Gilman, Drummond and Ginner. He was the proprietor of the Carfax Gallery which hosted three exhibitions of the group in June and December 1911 and December 1912. He also hosted exhibitions by several members of the Camden Town Group and was Sickert's principal dealer at the time
