British rower Jim Shekhdar hangs on to the side of his boat Le Shark after being tossed out while negotiating huge breaking surf prior to coming ashore on North Stradbroke Island March 30, 2001. Lone British rower Shekhdar became the first man to row unassisted across the Pacific Ocean on Friday, but only after his boat was swamped in sight of land and he was forced to swim ashore. Shekhdar, 54, finished the epic 275-day journey after setting out from Ilo, Peru last July, and has rowed approximately 8.500 miles across the Pacific solo, continent to continent without being re-supplied in the ten month voyage.
