The three-masted 'Wellesley' is shown on the left of this scene. The ship was moored at North Shields, and trained boys to work as sailors. Two coal keels (barges) lie on the shore at the front of the scene, with a keelboat behind them. The artist Bernard Hemy lived at North Shields for many years, and was known for his views on the River Tyne and the nearby coast.
