Image description

Pakistani drug addicts smoke heroin underneath a bridge at the Habib Nala area (Embankment) in central Quetta October 1, 2001. An estimated 250 addicts use the embankment area to use their drugs. The prices of drugs from Afghanistan have been falling dramatically in Pakistan since the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. Over 95 percent of the heroin which ends up on the streets of Europe originates in the poppy fields on the rugged borderlands of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. Reuters/Jerry Lampen JFL/PB
