Jean Signer, a local fishing expert displays a 91centimetres long and 5.1 kg heavy salmon as fishing experts help the salmon to come across a dam at the "Salmon stream" in Rathmannsdorf near the eastern German town of Dresden October 30. More than half a century after pollution and flood control killed off the King of Fish, the salmon has returned to German rivers. The salmon, which breed in fresh water but spent much of their lives in the North Atlantic, have been swimming up the River Elbe in Saxony to spawn in the headwaters where they where introduced 2-1/2 years ago. The River Elbe has now been cleaned up and the river was stocked in 1995 with young fish hatched from Swedish and Irish eggs.
