Edward Barnes, Woodman (oil on canvas)

Inscribed fully along bottom, with 24 lines of verse by Simon Yorke II (1771-1834) in lower border, of scrolled compartments, including sitter's name, date and biographical details:...... Barnes appears twice: the figure fishing in the background on the left and close-up, in the centre foreground. He is standing on a path, full-length, wearing a top hat, in front of a cottage, at whose door stand a lady in a red dress and accompanied by a black dog just behind him on the left. He carries one of the swords of the Denbighshire Militia, which are still hanging in the Servants' Hall, in his right hand and an axe over his left shoulder. 'He knows full well to draw a Cork,/ And toast in Port 'The House of Yorke'.
