Lieutenant-General Sir Walter Kitchener KCB (1858-1912), 1908 circa. Oil on canvas mounted on plywood panel by Alphonse Jongers, 1908 circa This portrait was painted by way of thanks for hospitality when the artist stayed with Sir Walter Kitchener while he was Governor of Bermuda. Walter Kitchener was the younger son of Field Marshal Horatio Herbert, Lord Kitchener. He joined the army in 1876, saw service in the Second Afghan War (1878-80), the First Sudan War (1884-5) and was on the staff of Sir Redvers Buller during the Boer War (1899-1902). On 31 October he was appointed Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda, a post which he held until his death there in 1912.
