A woman grower cleans onions in a shed on a small farm near the viullage of Aquitania about 250 kms from Bogota. While the parents work their baby rests above them in a hammock, inhaling the acid fumes and being exposed to the lack of light and excessive humidity. At least 4,000 children work on onion farms in this region of Colombia, where they make about US$44 per month, working 10 hours a day. UNICEF has launched a program to send back to school most of these children and prevent health problems such as influenza, eye irritation and alcoholism. According to the Labor Ministry 1.75 million children aged between 12 and 17 work in Colombia. Picture taken 7MAY98.
