Artist: Thomas William Kennard (1825-1893) View of steam locomotive and train crossing Crumlin Viaduct over the River Ebbw and the town of Crumlin. `Crumlin Viaduct, On the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford Railway Extension to Taff Vale. Mr. Charles Liddell, Engineer, T. W. Kennard, Crumlin, Contractor. Length of Viaduct, 1670 feet;-Height, 215 feet,-Span 150 feet. Lithographed & Published by Newman & Co. 48 Watling St. London.’ The Crumlin Viaduct was constructed under the architect Charles Liddell (1813-1894) and designed by Thomas Kennard (1825-1893) The viaduct was considered to be one of the engineering wonders of the time when it was built in 1857. Hailed as "one of the most significant examples of technological achievement during the Industrial Revolution", in its 107 years of service until being dismantled in 1965, it remained the least expensive bridge for its size ever constructed and the tallest railway viaduct in the United Kingdom.
