Image description

By Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) Princess Takiyasha of the tenth century invokes a skeletal ghost to scare Mitsukuni. The princess recites a spell written on a scroll. She summons a giant skeleton that emerges from a terrifying black void and crashes through the tattered palace blinds with its bony fingers to threaten Mitsukuni and his companion. Princess Takiyasha was the daughter of the provincial warlord Taira no Masakado who tried to create an “eastern court” in Shimosa Province, competing with the Emperor of Kyoto. However, his rebellion was suppressed in 939 and Masakado was killed. After her death, Princess Takiyasha continued to live in the ruined Soma Palace. This print shows the episode in the legend where the emperor's official, Oya no Mitsukuni, goes in search of surviving conspirators.
