Image description

Van Mieris was second only to Rembrandt in the number and variety of self-portraits that he made. This one is indebted to Rembrandt's of 1640 (NG), and beyond that, to what may be Titian's, the so-called 'Ariosto' (NG). The artist presents himself as an elegant, cultured figure, unspotted by the practice of his art, who relies, not upon the crude transcription of reality, but upon his learning (embodied by the book) and disegno (meaning both abstract design and actual drawing), to fill the blank panel on his easel.
