March (Marzo), by Benedetto da Milano upon drawing by Bramantino, c. 1503-1508, 16th century (tapestry)
Detail. Allegory of the month of March; up in the middle, a big coat of arms of the lineage of Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, the governor of Milan, supported by two soldiers dressed with Roman armours, symbolizing the god Mars, protector of the month of March; under the emblem stands up the personification of the month, erected upon a pedestal, wearing a rust-coloured garment decorated with human faces, and holding a sparrow in his left hand; nearby, some male figures cut and pick up trees' wood, and other men are preparing the fields in view of the sowing.
