The painting depicts the aged Emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605) conversing with the famous Hindu ascetic, Gosain Jadrup. They are seated outside Jadrup’s humble hermitage, located on hillside and outside the city of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. The Mughal Emperor bears a halo which signifies his divinely-sanctioned rule. To demonstrate respect, Akbar has removed his gold embroidered shoes, which are held by an attendant on the left. Standing next to Akbar is a falconer with a large raptor perched on his glove. The painting is set within an elaborate border decorated with leaves in various colors.
