A visitor to a World Population Day exhibition in Beijing's Working People's Cultural Palace takes a photo of a propaganda billboard encouraging people to follow China's family planning policies July 10. As the world's most populous nation with 1.2 billion people, China has enforced strict family planning laws such as the \"one-child\" policy in an effort to keep the population below 1.3 billion by the turn of the century. On the ocasion of the U.N. designated World Population Day which falls on July 11, United Nations Population Fund Executive Director [Nafis Sadik] said that if people can exercise their right to choose the size and spacing of their family, the world will be on the way to slower and more balanced population growth.
