Autograph: 1672 letter from Charles II to Sir George Downing, Ambassador at the Hague, written shortly before the outbreak of the Dutch war. Charles II instructs Sir George Downing in his conduct of negotiations. Written at Whitehall, 16 January 1672. Signature: Charles II. War was declared by England against the Dutch on 17 March, and by France three days later. Downing suddenly returned home, from fear of mob violence at the Hague on 6 February.
