Chinese migrant workers cram a local bank office in the southern city of Panyu, in Guangdong province, to remit large proportions of their salaries back home to support their families March 7. With a bluntness rarely heard from top Chinese leaders, Premier Zhu Rongji has warned of though times ahead for the economy this year. Yet in a state-of the-nation address to parliament last week, Zhu also made clear the problems did not mean China would shirk painful solutions, despite simmering unrest in cities and the countryside.
