29.7 TEXTILES: COSTUME chasuble Italy (place of manufacture) (velvet): England (place of manufacture) (orphreys) circa 1475-1499: circa 1700-1799 (altered) silk, metal overall: 1180 mm x 679 mm Chasuble in red silk velvet embroidered with large stylised sprays of lilies and other flowers in silk floss worked in spit stitch, couched metal threads and metal spangles. Applied band of embroidered with orphreys at centre front and back in blue silk velvet with applied and embroidered figures of angles and saints, including St Peter and St Anne, worked in silk floss and metal threads using long and short stitches, padded satin stitch, straight stitch, raised-work and couched silk and metal threads. Re-shaped into later spoon-shape or fiddleback with edges bound with ten-strand metal thread plait.
