Turner (1667-1741) was a physician and member of the Barber-Surgeons' Company. He was the most published writer of surgical works in early 18th-century London, and used his writings to improve the art of surgery and advance the status of surgeons in society. He was well known for his advocating the use of internal medicines in the treatment of syphilis, which had previously been treated through external methods. ©SSPL/Science Museum
