Debut de l'aviation : John Moisant effectue le premier transport de passagers au dessus de la Manche en emportant son mecanicien dans son avion Bleriot biplace le 17 aout 1910. Lithographie de Marguerite Montaut The first cross-Channel passenger flight, 17 August 1910. Coloured lithograph by Marguerite Montaut showing John Moisant and his mechanic on their flight from Calais to Dover in a two-seater Bleriot monoplane. The picture shows the monoplane flying towards the Dover cliffs and is semi-vignetted with a portrait of the pilot. Ernest Montaut (1879-1909) and his wife, Marguerite, were the first artists to capture the 'Heroic Age' of aviation and motor racing. The Gamy-Montaut prints were produced by the pochoir process, in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. The prints were then painstakingly coloured using individual colour stencils. Marguerite carried on producing pictures for Mabileau & Co after the death of her husband. ©SSPL/Science Museum
