EGYPT Overview of the Aswan Dam, at an intermediate stage between the first British work of the beginning of the century and the new grandiose barrier built 6 kilometres upstream. Construction of the High Dam began in 1960 and was finished on 21 July 1970, while the creation of the reservoir that would accommodate the waters had completed in 1964, including the displacement works of the archaeological monuments that would otherwise have been submerged by Lake Nasser; from that time it had begun to fill progressively, although the dam had not yet been completed, until it reached the maximum capacity in 1976.
